Plenary session 3: Transforming healthcare – Innovation spaces driving inclusive action

Global healthcare systems are under growing pressure from ageing populations, chronic diseases and continuing inequalities in access to advanced medical breakthroughs. What role can innovation spaces can play in connecting clinicians, researchers, startups, regulators and industry? How can they help to overcome the regulatory, financial and operational barriers that often stand between research and patient impact?
Four models from France, Italy, Türkiye and Belgium show how this can work in practice. France brings together hospital and science park capabilities around next-gen medical devices, advanced simulation with digital twins of human organs, and AI diagnostics. Italy’s “Research Angel” model introduces business and regulatory expertise into research teams from the earliest stages of discovery. In Türkiye, a university incubator is working with a global mobility brand to turn the vehicle cabin into a health-monitoring environment, while Belgium’s health ecosystem is addressing the international logistics challenges of fragile cell and gene therapies to ensure more inclusive access.
