Breakout session 3: Smart and sustainable cities – Resilience by design
October 28th, 2026 — 15:30 - 16:30
Description
How can cities use technology to become more resilient without creating solutions that remain disconnected from the realities of the places they serve? The session opens with a concrete example from Amadeus, EURECOM and Cerema-Géoazur in France, where seismic sensors and deep learning are being used to predict the structural behaviour of the 17th-century San Cristobal Church in Cusco, Peru, supporting damage assessment without invasive testing.
The session will also look at resilience at the level of urban and park infrastructure. Area Science Park in Trieste manages energy-intensive data centres through real-time dashboards and renewable energy integration. In Iran, Isfahan Science and Technology Town combines solar farms with smart water recycling as part of its response to the challenges of an arid climate. The São José dos Campos Technology and Innovation Park in Brazil operates a municipal regulatory sandbox where startups can test mobility and energy innovations under ISO smart-city certification.
